More about Replacement Windows. What is Low E Glass?

Low E Glass

Often times I have been asked “What is Low E Glass and how does it work?”  The best explanation that I have come up with is this.  Low E Glass is like a mirror. It reflects heat back to the source. In the summer it reflects the heat given off by the sun back outside.  In the winter it reflects the heat given off by your furnace back into the home.

For most of our clients this explanation is good enough.  However, there are those who want to know a little more, me being one of them.   It is actually microscopic layers of silver protected by titanium dioxide applied to the glass.

Another Way Windows Can Reduce Your Heating Bill

There are three types of light that come into our homes First is the desirable type, that which we can see. (VLT) Visible Light Transmittance.  It makes your home bright and inviting.  Then we have UV-Light or UV Rays which are harmful to drapes carpeting and furnishings.  Last is Near Infrared Light. This is what causes Solar Heat Gain.  By decreasing the amount of this into our homes means we save energy and money. In the winter your heating bill will go down and in the summer you cooling bill will go down. We install many of these in the greater Columbus area.

A secondary savings comes along with this as well.  With energy efficient windows you also save on maintenance costs for both your furnace and your air conditioner.  They are not working as hard to maintain your comfort.  I have had customers tell me that their furnace was running almost non-stop.  After putting in new windows this was not the case.  Low E Glass combined with some other energy saving measures cut your fuel costs.  I will discuss those next week.  In the meantime, please take a look at our website for more about replacement window options.
