Glass Package for Windows

The question comes down to Double or Triple pane Windows.  There are some factors you should consider before making that decision.  Sound transmission, efficiency, weight of the glass.  and of course cost.

Sound transmission.

When it comes to sound transmission tests have shown that there is very little difference.  You are better off to go with a double pane glass package with a heavy gas like argon between the panes of glass or even a laminated glass package.

Weight of the window.

The weight of the window should not matter.  All good windows have a balancing system that has been tested with triple pane windows and should come with a warranty that covers this.  Also because of advances in technology new windows have the strength to handle the weight.  Multi-chambered virgin vinyl sashes and frames assure this.  Another point is that unless you live in a hurricane zone or just want to throw money away you do not need frames reinforced with aluminum.  This is just another sales gimmick to up the selling price.

How beneficial are triple pane energy efficient windows?

There is certainly an improvement in efficiency when comparing triple pane vs double pane windows.  It’s important to compare the window rating including u-factor, shgc and visible transmission when comparing.

Triple pane windows are 20-30% better than a similar double pane window.  That’s a pretty substantial improvement.  They will also have better SHGC ratings as they tend to have two surfaces coated with a low-e coating.  These coatings will leave you with a lower visible transmission rating meaning it will typically be darker in a home with triple pane windows

Cost of triple pane vs double pane windows:

Sure triple pane windows cost more than double pane.  There is more product and are harder to install. In my experience triple pane costs $100 to $150 per window more.  It has another pane of glass and another coat of low E and depending on the window.  On the other hand, you can save another 20% to 30% on energy costs.

There is a tradeoff.  How long are you going to stay in the home? Is the energy savings worth the extra cost? Sometimes that savings is worth it. Check out our replacement window options!
