Bay and Bow Windows

When to choose Bay and Bow Windows

What is the difference?

The easiest way to tell is the actual number of windows.  A bay window has three.  A Bow Window has four or more The Bay Window has a picture window in the middle with two flankers on each side.  The two on the side of the picture window can be double hung or casement.  A bow window has several windows and is curved. Some or all of them can be casements.

What rooms do they work best in?

We normally place these in living rooms and or kitchens. They bring in much more light than a traditional window and also make the room appear larger. They are also the focal point of the room. Bay Windows have a larger seat than a Bow Window where you can put things or actually sit on them. At Columbus Windows and Siding we have installed several Bay Windows for Cat Lovers.  They love them because they can sit and look out the two sidelights. You have decided you want one.

The next step is to find a company that sells and installs bay and bow windows.  Of course you want to make sure the windows are energy efficient but even more important is the installation.  Columbus Windows and Siding is a Licensed General Contractor. Unlike other Window Replacement Companies that just replace windows we are able to pull the necessary permits to do cut-ins and more.  We have to check the projections of your soffit and if necessary build a roof on top of the window.  Also we may have to run a cable support system for the window.  This will attach the window to the main structure. We have replaced many bay windows because they were sagging.

Architectural Compatibility

Bay and bow windows work well in traditional, transitional or contemporary homes. Tip: look into our custom colors and grids to exude the style you are going for. The right color can turn a traditional window into a contemporary one.

What rooms are best for bay and bow windows and why?
Think of these windows as “show offs.” And we mean that in a good way! The front of your home is a great place for a bay or bow window. When it comes to functionality, add a bay window to a study to create the perfect spot for a good book.
